| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa question communautaire est récurrente dans les travaux relatifs aux cultures numériques. Pourtant, elle n’est pas le propre des relations en ligne. Il convient de rappeler les différences entre société et communauté, notamment avec Tönnies, qui analyse la première comme un moyen rationnel orienté vers une fin et la seconde comme une expérience trouvant sa raison d’être en soi. Bon nombre d’auteurs centrés sur les phénomènes en ligne ont souligné la force parfois presque mystique de l’être-ensemble numérique. Nous garderons l’idée que la communauté virtuelle s’inscrit dans un contexte socio-historique de transformations profondes du lien social réel. |

| Summary, etc. | Community is a recurring topic in research touching on digital cultures. Yet this notion is not specifically linked to computer-mediated communication. Differences between society and community must be stressed, especially in reference to the works of Tönnies, who describes the former as an instrumental rationality-oriented process and the latter as a self-sufficient experience. Several authors addressing online interactions have highlighted, sometimes in almost mystical terms, the strength of digital togetherness. In this article, virtual community is embedded in a social and historical context of deep transformations of real-life social cohesion. |
