520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Autism has become one of the afflictions of our age. The numbers of children placed on the autism "spectrum" now numbers about one in 88. While parents and educators cope with raising a generation with the condition, society is wondering: How did this happen? And what is to be done?   The Autism Story is intended for teachers and parents. The aim is to offer insight into the condition and the attendant industry of people who work to help those with the diagnosis become better functioning members of society. This short, clear and concise book provides people the information they need to help them make good decisions about how to raise their children.   But more than that, it is a cautionary tale about how society deals with a seemingly exploding condition that afflicts a rapidly rising number of our most precious commodity, our kids.   The Autism Story brings a fresh approach to the extensive literature on autism. The author draws upon her own long experience as a child psychologist, working with a large population of autistic children, to take readers through the story of a parent and teacher dealing with an autistic child. Using research findings from the field of developmental psychology, the author informs readers about this diagnosis which has evolved from "extremely rare" to the epidemic we know today.   Dr. June Pimm has advanced degrees in both Clinical and Developmental Psychology, and has worked in the field of autism for more than twenty years. She is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Miami School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, where she specializes in autism. She is the author of two books, several book chapters, and numerous research articles.  Dr. Pimm's long experience in the field of child psychology provides a strong foundation on which to build new insights to the understanding of the autism diagnosis. As Psychology Coordinator of the Autism program for a large urban school board, she has had the opportunity to support many new and innovative, intervention strategies within the classroom. Dr. Pimm is dedicated to providing the general public with evidence based information that is easily understood in her books, chapters and film.
