| Summary, etc. | « Car tous ceux que le Seigneur a adoptés et reçus en la compagnie de ses enfants, se doivent préparer à une vie dure, laborieuse, pleine de travail et d’infinis genres de maux », écrit le réformateur Jean Calvin (1509-1564) dans l’ Institution de la Religion Chrétienne. Or le travail est aussi une nécessité de nature, dira-t-il par ailleurs, mais que le chrétien est appelé à transformer en possibilité de témoigner de la gloire de Dieu. En ce double sens, le travail est une épreuve dont Calvin va enrichir le sens très au-delà de la seule pénibilité des tâches. Dans cette compréhension, la vie entière se trouve engagée dans un processus de conversion qui concourt à rendre compte de la puissance créatrice d’un Dieu provident qui fournit à chacun les biens et les capacités selon ses besoins. Surmonter l’épreuve consiste à accepter une transformation de soi en vue de transformer la société en une communion fraternelle. Cette contribution cherche à éclairer la part calvinienne de ce que Max Weber a qualifié, parlant d’un protestantisme plus tardif, d’ascétisme intramondain. Mais en replaçant cette épreuve qu’est le travail dans la visée d’une société solidaire et reconnaissante, elle ouvre peut-être aussi des possibilités de sens pour une compréhension renouvelée du travail aujourd’hui. | Summary, etc. | “Those whom the Lord has chosen and honoured with his intercourse must prepare for a hard, laborious, troubled life, a life full of many and various kinds of evils”, wrote the reformer John Calvin (1509-1564). Work is firstly a necessity of nature according to him, but the Christian has to transform it into an opportunity to witness to God's goodness. In this sense, work is an ordeal whose meaning Calvin will enrich beyond the mere arduousness of the tasks. Through sanctification, work is engaged in a process of conversion so that the providential God who provides each person with goods and abilities according to his or her needs may be recognized. The overcoming of the ordeal consists in accepting a transformation of oneself in order to transform society into a fraternal communion. This contribution seeks to shed light on the Calvinian part of what Max Weber, writing about a later Protestantism, has called inner-worldly asceticism. But it may also open up possibilities for a renewed understanding of work today. |
