520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Voluntary Depigmentation as an Expression of ShameThe author of this article draws on his clinical practice as a dermatologist to hypothesize on the existence of factors underlying the phenomenon of voluntary depigmentation. One such factor is the modulation of a sense of shame rooted in passivity towards a sense of guilt linked with the depigmentation itself. Another is the desire to turn shame into pride, another the subversive dimension of this activity and the challenges of depigemntation per se. Further factors include the dilution of ‘ethnicity’ within the framework of contemporary society and the desire for strictly individualistic self-determination of bodily appearance and exterior signs of belonging to a group.
