520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The loss of the bodies of the dead in their thousands during the First World War gives rise to agonizing uncertainty about their place of burial. Is a missing person dead ? Widows, mothers, daughters, and wives, in an effort not to spend their entire lives being haunted by the perpetual possibility of their loved ones’ghostly return, have thrown themselves headlong, and at greatpersonal risk, into clandestine scavenging through the killingfields. To recover a piece of human remains, some relic, is the challenge taken up by these indefatigable Antigones. The remains of the dead would open a place for their psychic burial. It is as if relics possessed the magical power to impart a bodily shape to the missing. In this way, burial can lay to rest the wandering dead and fix the psychic contours of a place in which to mourn. |
