520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Bodies of Shame in Clinical Practice and ArtShame is often expressed through the body, and most particularly by the skin. The author of this article moves away from the traditional psychoanalytical model which views such manifestations as symptoms to explore the idea that the skin’s expressivity may be regarded as a source of creativity. As a frontier between interior and exterior worlds, the skin sheds light on what we would prefer to keep hidden, in a complex network involving the gaze and narcissism, as excessive or lacking, as two clinical cases clearly show. The body of shame is also represented in art, in particularly through the iconography of the Man of Suffering and more recently in the work of painter Jean Rustin. |
