| Summary, etc. | Résumé La «vieillesse» est une notion approximative. Elle varie d’une personne à l’autre, d’une époque à une autre, et ne présente pas des mesures constantes ou des critères définis scientifiquement : tous les signes biologiques de santé sont présents dans le corps de la personne âgée en bonne santé. Cet article montre combien la vieillesse est une construction culturelle. Nous illustrons ce point de vue en analysant l’impact des systèmes symboliques qui composent une culture sur les conditions sociales et affectives des personnes âgées. Nous montrons enfin la manière dont la culture traditionnelle du Burundi permet de distinguer le vieux de l’ancien et donne à ce dernier une fonction sociale très utile. |

| Summary, etc. | «Old age» is an approximate notion. It varies from a man to another, from a time to another, and does not have constant measures or criteria scientifically defined: all the biological indications of health are kept stable in the human body of a healthy old. This article shows precisely that old age is a cultural construction. We illustrate this assertion by analysing the impact of symbolic systems that make up one culture on the social and affective condition of the old people. We show, finally, how the Burundian traditional culture used to distinguish old from ancient, and gave to the last a very useful function in the society. |
