| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’impulsivité constitue un dénominateur commun à de nombreux états psychopathologiques et comportements problématiques. Le but du présent article est de décrire l’approche multidimensionnelle de l’impulsivité proposée par Whiteside et Lynam (2001). Selon cette approche, l’impulsivité peut être scindée en quatre facettes distinctes : l’urgence, le manque de préméditation, le manque de persévérance et la recherche de sensations. Par ailleurs, nous suggérons également que ces différentes facettes sont associées à des mécanismes cognitifs, émotionnels et motivationnels spécifiques. Enfin, nous décrirons des études récentes qui montrent en quoi cette conception de l’impulsivité en quatre dimensions peut contribuer à une meilleure compréhension des problèmes d’autorégulation chez l’enfant et l’adolescent. |

| Summary, etc. | Impulsivity constitutes a common denominator of a wide range of psychopathological states and problematic behaviours. The goal of the present paper is to describe the multi-dimensional approach to impulsivity proposed by Whiteside and Lynam (2001). According to this approach, impulsivity may be divided into four distinct dimensions : urgency, lack of premeditation, lack of perseverance, and sensation seeking. We also suggest that the four mentioned facets of impulsivity relate to different cognitive, emotional and motivational mechanisms. Finally, we will review recent studies showing that the four-facet model of impulsivity may contribute to a better understanding of self-regulation problems in children and adolescents. |
