Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Developmental Gerstmann’s syndrome (DGS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder in children characterized by four cardinal symptoms : finger agnosia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and right-left confusion. Controversy surrounds the existence of DGS, especially about supporting the view that this disorder constitutes a unique syndrome. Nevertheless, this conjuction of symptoms continues to be of interest to neurodevelopmental specialists, considering it offers a framework for a conceptual approach of the development of arithmetical abilities. Since the seminal description of Gerstmann, the neuro-cognitive relationship between finger gnosis and numerical performance has been debated in particular. This paper presents a single-case study based on the neuropsychological profile of a child who meet the criteria for DGS. Detailed analyses of the quantitative and qualitative data collected are provided and the theoretical implications of the child’s clinical profile are discussed. Our data can cautiously prove useful in addressing both the question of the involvement of a specific neuro-cognitive system in numerical performance and of the pathological repercussions of its possible developmental impairments. |
