| Summary, etc. | Abstract: At the beginning of the 20th century, Victor Bérard presents an original interpretation of Boeotian geography in Les Phéniciens et l’Odyssée, with Thebes portrayed as a Phoenician foundation at the heart of a route between the gulfs of Corinth and Euboea. This analysis contrasts with the traditional vision of Boeotia “without much connection to the sea”, to support what V. Bérard terms the “law of isthmuses”. This theory, never abandoned by its author, was quickly disavowed by posterity. Contextualizing it here allows for a better understanding and an exploration of whether it can regain relevance. |
