| Summary, etc. | Que peut dire l’historien du nouveau paradigme numérique de la psychiatrie ? Certes celui-ci écrase par sa nouveauté les continuités qu’une science et une pratique entretiennent pourtant avec leur passé. Mais est-ce bien la première fois qu’un événement dans l’histoire de la psychiatrie introduit simultanément de tels changements dans la manière de mesurer les souffrances individuelles et de prédire l’évolution des maladies ? L’association de l’utilisation du big data, d’une approche biologique de la maladie mentale et d’une démarche prédictive constitue le projet de la psychiatrie kraepelinienne de la fin des années 1890. Je propose dans cet article de faire retour sur le temps de fondation de ce projet et sur les débats qu’il suscita afin d’éclairer les enjeux sociaux d’une transformation conceptuelle et pratique si ce n’est équivalente, du moins comparable. |

A focus on the development of the diagnostic of dementia praecox and schizophrenia during the first half of the XXth centuryWhat can a historian say about the new numeric paradigm emerging within the field of psychiatry? Certainly, this new paradigm dominates that which comes from a long history of psychiatry that maintains itself through reflecting on the past. But, is this really the first time that an event in the history of psychiatry has introduced such changes in a way that has assessed the suffering of individuals and even predicted the evolution of psychiatric illnesses and diseases? By evoking concepts such as big data usage, a biological approach to mental illness and the predictive precautions we are directed towards the Kraepelinian psychiatry project that dates back to the end of the 1890s. I propose in this article to step back in time to the foundation of this project and to take a look at the debates that it provoked within the field in order to shed light onto the social stakes at play within a conceptual transformation and practice – if not equivalent or at least comparable in any way. |
