This foundational question in American sociology draws attention to the way in which social relations of race and class intertwine in shaping individual trajectories and practices. Based on four case- studies conducted among “elites” circulating and residing in various geographical contexts, this dossier seeks to build upon a well-established research tradition on the other side of the Atlantic on the Black middle classes by shifting the focus toward other national configurations. Ultimately, the dossier calls for a re-examination of the race-class debate, by exploring the ways in which racial, religious, and cultural cleavages are being reconfigured within privileged social strata. |
