| Summary, etc. | Economics is generally regarded as a science of rational choice, with a universal discourse based on general laws. This restrictive conception of the discipline was not the one considered by the Institut d’études sociales (IES). From the outset, the aim was to analyze the total social fact, be it political, economic or religious, while discussing the role of the Church’s social doctrine in modern society. The purpose of this article is to discuss the notion of Christian social order in the light of the study of IES programs, the Church’s social doctrine and economic thought. Through three divisions, we show that the Christian social order does not propose an ad hoc social order, but rather to organize the existing social order around the principle of justice and the common good. |

| Summary, etc. | L’économie est généralement considérée comme une science du choix rationnel, porteuse d’un discours de nature universelle fondé sur des lois générales. Cette conception restrictive de la discipline ne fut pas celle envisagée par l’Institut d’études sociales (IES). Dès sa création, il s’agissait d’analyser le fait total, qu’il soit à la fois politique, économique ou religieux, tout en discutant du rôle de la doctrine sociale de l’Église au sein de la société moderne. L’enjeu de cet article est de proposer une discussion de la notion d’ordre social chrétien à l’aune de l’étude des programmes de l’IES, de la doctrine sociale de l’Église et de la pensée économique. À travers trois fractures, nous montrons que l’ordre social chrétien ne propose pas de créer un ordre social ad hoc mais plutôt d’organiser l’ordre social existant autour du principe de justice et de bien commun. |
