| Summary, etc. | Our paper address uncertainty as a structural feature of contemporary hospital institutions and explores how the anxiety stemming from this uncertainty may or may not be managed emotionally by the directors tasked with organizing these institutions. Drawing on materials collected during an extensive ethnographic study of this population, we hypothesize that hospital directors, whether consciously or not, engage in a process of working through their own anxiety – and at times, that of others – when faced with uncertainty. We argue that this emotional work could pave the way for a clinical mode of listening that enables an interpretive stance centered on the lived experience of uncertainty, rather than being confined to the concrete organization of the institution. We link this acceptance of not-knowing to philosophical notions of non-action and propose that reflecting on the emotional consequences of uncertainty can help avoid rushed, reactionary decision-making. |

| Summary, etc. | Notre article traite de l’incertitude en tant que donnée structurelle des établissements hospitaliers aujourd’hui, et aborde la façon dont l’angoisse issue de cette incertitude peut ou non être gérée émotionnellement par les directeurs chargés d’organiser ces établissements. Sur la base de matériaux recueillis dans le cadre d’une enquête ethnographique au long cours auprès de cette population, nous faisons l’hypothèse que les directeurs d’hôpitaux sont amenés, consciemment ou non, à produire un travail de perlaboration de leur angoisse et parfois de celle des autres face à l’incertitude. Selon nous, ce travail émotionnel pourrait ouvrir la porte à une écoute clinique permettant d’user d’une position interprétative centrée sur le vécu de l’incertitude ne se retreignant pas à l’organisation concrète de l’institution. Nous relions cette acceptation du non-savoir aux conceptions philosophiques du non-agir, et postulons que penser les conséquences émotionnelles de l’incertitude permet ainsi d’éviter les décisions dans l’urgence. |
