| Summary, etc. | The division of human life into three, four, or seven ages remains the hallmark of scholarly discourse, and is linked to an analogical way of thinking (seven ages corresponding to the seven days of Creation, four ages to the four humours, etc.). The trend is toward bipartition, in other words, a simple opposition between youth and old age, as though the Middle Ages struggled to identify and conceptualize a median age—adulthood. This binary opposition is evident, for example, in the Latin and French Ovide moralisé. They allegorize the Ovidian myths that depict youth and old age, or the processes of rejuvenation and senescence (such as those of Aeson, Iolaus, Hippolytus, and so on) from a dual perspective, but with a certain axiological flexibility that sometimes values old age as the age of wisdom, and at other times, youth as the age of novelty and brightness. |

| Summary, etc. | Les partitions de la vie humaine en trois, quatre ou sept âges restent le propre des discours savants et sont liées à un mode de pensée analogique (sept âges en rapport avec les sept jours de la Création, quatre âges en rapport avec les quatre humeurs, etc.). La tendance est de fait à la bipartition, autrement dit à une simple opposition entre jeunesse et vieillesse, comme si le Moyen Âge avait du mal à nommer et à penser un âge médian, l’âge adulte. Cette binarité se vérifie entre autres dans les Ovide moralisés latins et français. Ils allégorisent ainsi les mythes ovidiens qui mettent en scène la jeunesse et la vieillesse ou les opérations de jouvence / sénescence (comme pour Éson, Iolaüs, Hippolyte, etc.) dans une perspective duelle, mais avec une certaine souplesse axiologique qui conduit à valoriser tantôt la vieillesse, âge de la sagesse, tantôt la jeunesse, âge de la nouveauté et de la lumière. |
