| Summary, etc. | The Lebanese Army’s archives are not open to researchers, but they surface in other settings: in the private collections of retired officers and, more broadly, in the military’s written and oral testimonies. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted among veterans, this article reexamines the history of the Lebanese Army during the civil war (1975–1990) by bringing servicemen into conversation with military archives. The absence of documents, their lacunae, and their selective conservation by generals offer insights into the daily workings of the military institution in the mids of conflict. Woven together, these fragments challenge the dominant narrative of an army paralyzed by political and sectarian tensions, revealing instead its bureaucratic performance, the autonomy of its combat units, and the factors driving their cohesion. |

| Summary, etc. | Les archives de l’armée libanaise ne sont pas ouvertes aux chercheurs, mais elles ressurgissent ailleurs : dans les collections privées d’officiers retraités et, plus largement, dans les témoignages écrits et oraux des militaires. À l’aide d’une vaste enquête orale menée auprès de vétérans, cet article réexamine l’histoire de l’armée libanaise pendant la guerre civile (1975-1990) en faisant dialoguer les militaires et leurs archives. L’absence de documents, leurs lacunes ou leur conservation fragmentaire par des généraux révèlent à leur façon des pans du quotidien de l’institution militaire au cours du conflit. Mis bout à bout, ces fragments contredisent l’image répandue d’une armée paralysée par les tensions politiques et communautaires et donnent à voir la vitalité de sa bureaucratie, l’autonomie des unités combattantes et les ressorts de leur cohésion. |
