| Summary, etc. | While inseparable from his philosophical work, Michel Meyer's reflections on literature also maintain a certain autonomy. Identified with figurativity, literature responds to the figurativity of society itself. This response is based on the play of questioning, a means of exposing multiple heterogeneities—those of time, society, actions, and discourse—while carefully mapping the transition from one form of heterogeneity to another. This is the fundamental paradox of literature. By means of its figurativity, it mirrors social discourse and symbolism, but through the questioning it conveys, it remains autonomous. In this way, the work of Michel Meyer addresses a central debate in contemporary literary theory. At the same time, he goes further by interpreting the history of literature—particularly that of theater—as a reading of human history, without subjecting literature to a rigid framework of determination. This approach places problematization at the heart of any reading of the history of ideas, the arts, and humanity itself. It also allows for the exploration of inter-artistic relationships: literary and artistic forms, through their implicit or explicit rhetoric, present this reading in ways that are more or less contemporary and relevant. The forms that impose themselves are those that seem most timely and pertinent. Through questioning and problematization, literature is always in the end a form of difference. |

| Summary, etc. | La part de l’œuvre de Michel Meyer qui concerne la littérature, est indissociable de sa réflexion philosophique. Cette part a cependant une autonomie certaine. Identifiée à la figurativité, la littérature répond à la figurativité de la société. Cette réponse repose sur le jeu du questionnement, moyen d’exposer plusieurs hétérogénéités, celles du temps, de la société, des actions, des discours, et dessin du passage d’une part de l’hétérogénéité à une autre. C’est là le paradoxe constitutif de la littérature : celle-ci est, par sa figurativité, le calque du discours et de la symbolique sociaux, et, par le questionnement qu’elle porte, autonome. Michel Meyer répond là au débat central de la théorie littéraire contemporaine. Il fait plus : il lit l’histoire de la littérature, en particulier, celle du théâtre, comme l’interprète de l’histoire des hommes sans qu’on ait à placer la littérature sous un strict jeu de détermination. C’est là faire de la problématicité ce qui caractérise la lecture de l’histoire des idées, des arts et des hommes. Il y a là aussi le moyen de dessiner des rapports interartistiques : les formes littéraires et artistiques, par leur rhétorique implicite ou explicite, présentent cette lecture de manière plus ou moins actuelle et pertinente ; s’imposent les formes qui paraissent les plus actuelles et pertinentes. Par le questionnement et par la problématicité, la littérature est toujours une différence. |
