| Summary, etc. | Drawing on work by Bergson, Baudelaire, and Freud, amongst others, this article develops a rhetorical account of laughter and comedy. The comic is always the result of a dynamic of identity and difference: what makes us laugh is an identity unaware of its own difference, a structure illustrated in the ridiculous figure of Cervantes’ Don Quixote. Laughter is a means of assuring distance between the object and the spectator, the result of an identity that is taken literally but which should be interpreted figuratively. If laughter sets the comical person at one remove from the individual who takes pleasure in laughing, the genre of comedy is a means of bringing resolution and thus of closing the distance opened up by the comic. Problematology shows us that aesthetic pleasure always involves questions, or problems, that we treat as though they were already resolved, through the rhetorical displacement of theatrical performance. |

| Summary, etc. | S’appuyant sur les travaux de Bergson, Baudelaire et Freud, entre autres, cet article développe une approche rhétorique du rire et de la comédie. Le comique est le résultat d’une dynamique d’identité et de différence : ce qui nous fait rire est une identité inconsciente de sa propre différence, ce qu’illustre la figure ridicule du Don Quichotte de Cervantès. Le rire instaure une distance entre l’objet et le spectateur, ce qui est la conséquence d’une identité prise au pied de la lettre lorsqu’elle devrait être interprétée de manière figurative. Si le rire met à distance la personne comique de celle qui en rit, le genre comique permet de résoudre cette tension et de réduire, sinon abolir, la distance ouverte par le comique. La problématologie montre que le plaisir esthétique implique toujours des questions, ou des problemes, que nous traitons comme étant déjà résolus à travers le déplacement rhétorique de la performance théâtrale. |
