Summary, etc. | This article looks at the experiences, in terms of wages and employer relations, of the « dogsbodies » of the Department for Education, the menial functionaries of the education sector assisting disabled pupils (AESH), as well as educational assistants (AED), two heavily gendered and precarious groups. The professional tensions faced by these agents are indicative of the socio-territorial ambiguities faced by the educational establishment. The Department for Education are managing to take advantage of « care » work, in other words the free emotional investment of workers taking on more and more duties as a way of compensating for the lack of academic staff and other social assistance systems at a local level. A study of two middle schools in high-priority catchments, in a small town and an urban setting, show how interpersonal work allows deficiencies to be covered up in an impoverished area. |

Summary, etc. | Cet article s’intéresse aux expériences salariées et relationnelles des « petites mains » de l’Éducation nationale, à savoir les agents subalternes du travail éducatif que sont les accompagnantes d’élèves en situation de handicap (AESH) et les assistantes d’éducation (AED), deux catégories fortement genrées et précaires. Les tensions professionnelles que connaissent ces agentes renseignent sur les ambivalences socio-territoriales auxquelles l’institution scolaire est confrontée. L’Éducation nationale parvient à tirer profit d’un travail de care, c’est-à-dire d’un investissement émotionnel et gratuit des salariées qui multiplient les prises en charge censées compenser le manque de personnel scolaire et d’autres dispositifs d’accompagnement social à l’échelle locale. L’étude de deux collèges en réseau prioritaire, dans une petite commune et en milieu urbain, montre comment le travail relationnel permet de couvrir les défaillances institutionnelles au sein d’un territoire paupérisé. |
