| Summary, etc. | This review explores the involvement of blood rheological properties in sickle cell anemia. After outlining some basic hemodynamic and hemorheological principles, we define blood viscosity and its main determinants—hematocrit, plasma viscosity, red blood cell deformability and aggregation. This first part concludes with a discussion of the relationship between blood viscosity and vascular response, including the Fåhræus and Fåhræus-Lindqvist effects typical of microcirculation. The second part explores how blood rheology is implicated in sickle cell anemia, detailing the cellular and molecular determinants of hemorheological abnormalities, such as the effects of fetal hemoglobin, α-thalassemia, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, βS haplotypes, ion channels and membrane transporters, oxidative stress, nitric oxide, and red blood cell mitochondrial retention. |

| Summary, etc. | Cette revue porte sur l’implication des propriétés rhéologiques du sang dans la drépanocytose. Après avoir rappelé quelques principes hémodynamiques et hémorhéologiques de base, nous décrivons ce qu’est la viscosité sanguine et quels en sont les déterminants principaux (hématocrite, viscosité plasmatique, déformabilité et agrégation érythrocytaires). Cette première partie se termine par une discussion sur les interactions entre viscosité sanguine et réponse vasculaire, et une présentation des effets Fåhræus et Fåhræus-Lindqvist, typiques de la microcirculation. La deuxième partie porte sur l’implication de la rhéologie du sang dans la drépanocytose et sur les déterminants cellulaires et moléculaires des anomalies hémorhéologiques dans la drépanocytose, tels que les effets de l’hémoglobine fœtale, de l’α-thalassémie, du déficit en glucose-6-phosphate déshydrogénase, des haplotypes βS, des canaux ioniques et des transporteurs membranaires, du stress oxydatif, du monoxyde d’azote et de la rétention mitochondriale érythrocytaire. |
