It examines the issues surrounding disappearance and death in a variety of contexts (armed conflict, natural disasters, common law crime, etc.). Death is considered in all its dimensions, from the most material to the political and memorial consequences. By questioning death in its physicality – from the management of remains upon discovery (or non-discovery, in the case of disappearance) to their burial – this dossier also considers violent death in its symbolic dimensions, as a metaphor for the erasure and twilight of an era. |

| Summary, etc. | Le présent dossier est consacré à l’administration de la mort violente dans l’empire colonial français et ses zones d’influence. Il examine les enjeux liés à la disparition et à la mort dans une hétérogénéité de contextes (conflit armé, catastrophe naturelle, criminalité de droit commun…). La mort y est envisagée de ses dimensions les plus matérielles jusqu’à ses conséquences politiques et mémorielles. Interrogeant la mort dans sa corporalité, la gestion des dépouilles de leur découverte (ou non, en cas de disparition) à leur inhumation y est étudiée. Ce dossier considère également la mort violente dans ses dimensions symboliques, comme la métaphore d’un effacement et du crépuscule d’une époque. |
