| Summary, etc. | The new questions raised by environmental history have the potential to renew the historiography of cultural practices. This article explores this perspective by proposing avenues for an environmental reading of sports history. Revolutionary changes in transportation, media, and infrastructure made it possible for 20th century sporting events to reach a gigantic scale, leading to increasingly large ecological footprints. Thanks to advances in science and technology, the rise of international sporting competitions also brought about an unprecedented rationalization of athletic training in the name of optimizing performance. As a result, sports institutions have become global environmental actors, facing longstanding challenges and critiques. |

| Summary, etc. | Les questions neuves posées par l’histoire environnementale peuvent renouveler l’historiographie des pratiques culturelles. C’est l’objet de cet article, qui propose des pistes pour une lecture environnementale de l’histoire du sport. Le gigantisme des événements de la fin du 20e siècle est rendu possible par la révolution des transports, des médias et des infrastructures, avec une empreinte écologique croissante. L’essor des compétitions internationales a provoqué une rationalisation sans précédent de la maîtrise du corps sportif, grâce aux sciences et aux techniques, au nom de la performance. Les institutions sportives sont ainsi devenues des actrices environnementales à l’échelle mondiale, faisant face à des contestations déjà anciennes. |
