| Summary, etc. | Sexual violence is a major social problem in contemporary societies. Among the risk factors for sexual violence, acceptance of rape myths and modern myths about sexual aggression is the best documented. Recently, the revised version of the Acceptance of Modern Myths About Sexual Aggression (AMMSA-21) scale has been developed in several languages to better reflect contemporary beliefs when assessing the acceptance of these myths, but no French version is currently available. The aim of the present study was to translate the AMMSA-21 into French and validate this version. The items were translated using the back-translation process commonly employed in intercultural research. A sample of 247 French-speaking participants was recruited via social networks to complete the questionnaire, which included the translated version of the AMMSA-21 and scales assessing associated attitudes. The analyses indicated significant and substantial positive correlations between the total score obtained on the AMMSA-21 and the total scores observed on scales assessing the adherence to sexist attitudes, social dominance, right-wing authoritarianism, rape myths, propensity to rape, as well as anti-victim beliefs that contribute to exonerating the perpetrators of sexual violence. Furthermore, the AMMSA-21 was not associated with socially desirable responding. The scale demonstrated strong psychometric properties in terms of internal consistency (Cronbach’s Alpha was 0.93), as well as predictive, convergent, and discriminant validity. The AMMSA-21 is therefore a short and valid scale that can be used both for research purposes and for the design and evaluation of interventions to prevent sexual violence. |
