| Summary, etc. | An association, the Union pour l’Action Morale, led by the spiritualist philosopher Paul Desjardins, organized nine “Free Discussions” from November 1904 to May 1905, which played an important role in the development of the law on the separation of church and state (December 9, 1905). Indeed, during these discussions, intellectuals, free thinkers, Catholics, and Protestants, as well as political figures (Ferdinand Buisson, president of the parliamentary committee to implement the separation of church and state, Jean Jaurès, etc.), clarified the main issues posed by the end of the regime of “recognized religions,” which had governed relations between the state and the churches since 1802. For example, the formulation of Article 4, which safeguards the rights of churches in the management of worship, was developed during the UAM discussions. Thus, the UAM significantly contributed to the liberal political philosophy of the law on the separation of church and state. |

| Summary, etc. | Une association, l’Union pour l’Action morale, animée par le philosophe spiritualiste Paul Desjardins, a organisée, de novembre 1904 à mai 1905, neuf « Libres Entretiens » qui ont joué un rôle important dans l’élaboration de la loi de séparation des Églises et de l’État (9 décembre 1905). En effet, lors de ces Entretiens des intellectuels, libres-penseurs, catholiques ou protestants, ainsi que des personnalités politiques (Ferdinand Buisson, président de la Commission parlementaire sur la séparation, Jean Jaurès, etc.) ont clarifié les principaux problèmes posés par la fin du régime des « cultes reconnus », qui régissait, depuis 1802, les rapports entre l’État et les Églises. Par exemple, la formulation de l’article 4, qui sauvegarde les droits des Églises dans la gestion du culte, a été trouvée lors des Entretiens de l’UAM. Ainsi, l’UAM a fortement contribué à la philosophie politique libérale de la loi de Séparation. |
