| Summary, etc. | De aard van psychoanalytische kennis en de narcistische investering ervan door psychoanalytici Dit artikel heeft tot doel de multidimensionele aard van psychoanalytische kennis en de narcistische investering van psychoanalytici in hun theorieën te bestuderen. Het zal de uitdagingen onderzoeken die deze combinatie met zich meebrengt voor een beroep waarin het voorwerp van studie, deels, constitutief ongrijpbaar blijft voor logische deductie, empirisch onderzoek of rationele argumentatie, en opmerken dat het ontbreken hiervan vaak gepaard gaat met een potentieel verblindende persoonlijke investering in een theorie, wat tegelijkertijd een deel van de overtuiging biedt, onmisbaar voor het functioneren van een effectieve clinicus. Deze netelige paradox kan psychoanalytici in een inefficiënte positie brengen om controverses het hoofd te bieden, vooral wanneer ze niet uitgerust zijn met wetenschappelijke, methodologische en retorische instrumenten nodig om het soort problemen op te lossen waarmee ze geconfronteerd worden. Deze hulpmiddelen zijn de volgende: het onderscheiden van verschillende graden van psychologische kennis, het vatten van de sprongen en deducties die gemaakt zijn om de kloof tussen kliniek en theorie te overbruggen, het begrijpen van de vervormende effecten van onzekerheid op het denken, het onderscheid weten maken tussen overtuigingen en overredingen en ten slotte de capaciteit om zijn ideeën op een efficiënte manier te beargumenteren. Bij wijze van conclusie worden enkele ideeën voorgesteld om deze moeilijkheden op een vruchtbare manier aan te pakken en omtrent de richting die we zouden kunnen uitgaan om onze discipline vooruit te helpen. |

| Summary, etc. | The nature of psychoanalytic knowledge and its narcissistic investment by psychoanalysts This paper endeavours to inquire into the multi-dimensional nature of psychoanalytical knowledge, and the entwinement of analysts’ identities with their theories. It will explore the challenges this combination poses to a profession where the object of study is, in part, constitutionally elusive to logical deduction, empirical findings, or rational argumentation, and how the lack thereof is often accompanied by a potentially blinding personal investment with a theory that provides, at the same time, the indispensable conviction to function as an effective clinician. This thorny paradox can leave psychoanalysts in an ineffectual position when it comes to controversies, particularly if they are unequipped with the epistemological, methodological and rhetorical tools necessary to resolve the category of problems they are confronted with. These tools include: establishing clear distinctions between orders of psychoanalytical knowledge, comprehending the leaps of inference made between the clinical-theoretical gap, being aware of the warping effects uncertainty has on thinking, discriminating between convictions and persuasions, and knowing how to argue one’s ideas effectively. Some ideas as to how we could fruitfully address these difficulties, and what direction we might consider going in to advance our discipline, will be offered in conclusion. |

| Summary, etc. | La naturaleza del conocimiento psicoanalítico y su investidura narcisista por los psicoanalistas Este artículo pretende indagar en la naturaleza multidimensional del conocimiento psicoanalítico y la investidura narcisista de los analistas sobre sus teorías. Explorará los retos que esta combinación plantea a una profesión en la que el objeto de estudio es, en parte, constitutivamente esquivo a la deducción lógica, a los hallazgos empíricos o la argumentación racional, y cómo la falta de éstos suele ir acompañada de una investidura personal potencialmente cegadora en una teoría que proporciona, al mismo tiempo, una parte de la convicción indispensable para funcionar como un clínico eficaz. Esta espinosa paradoja puede dejar a los psicoanalistas en una posición ineficaz cuando se trata de controversias, sobre todo si no están equipados con las herramientas epistemológicas, metodológicas y retóricas necesarias para resolver la categoría de problemas a los que se enfrentan. Estas herramientas incluyen: establecer distinciones claras entre órdenes de conocimiento psicoanalítico, comprender los saltos de inferencia que se dan entre la brecha clínica-teórica, ser consciente de los efectos deformadores que la incertidumbre tiene sobre el pensamiento, discriminar entre convicciones y persuasiones, y saber argumentar las propias ideas con eficacia. A modo de conclusión, se ofrecerán algunas ideas sobre cómo podríamos abordar de forma fructífera estas dificultades y en qué dirección podríamos plantearnos avanzar en nuestra disciplina. |

Il explorera les défis que cette combinaison pose à une profession dans laquelle l’objet d’étude est, en partie, constitutivement insaisissable pour la déduction logique, la recherche empirique ou l’argumentation rationnelle, et comment le manque de ceux-ci est souvent accompagné d’un investissement personnel potentiellement aveuglant avec une théorie qui fournit, en même temps, une partie de la conviction indispensable au fonctionnement d’un clinicien efficace. Ce paradoxe épineux peut laisser les psychanalystes dans une position inefficace face aux controverses, surtout s’ils ne sont pas équipés des outils épistémologiques, méthodologiques et rhétoriques nécessaires pour résoudre la catégorie de problèmes à laquelle ils sont confrontés. Ces outils sont les suivants : distinguer clairement les ordres de connaissance psychanalytique, comprendre les sauts d’inférence qui se produisent entre la clinique et la théorie, être conscient des effets déformants de l’incertitude sur la pensée, faire la différence entre les convictions et les persuasions, et savoir argumenter ses idées de manière efficace. En guise de conclusion, quelques idées seront proposées sur la manière dont nous pourrions aborder ces difficultés de manière fructueuse et dans quelle direction nous pourrions envisager de faire avancer notre discipline. |
