| Summary, etc. | Artist, craftsman, businessman, writer, and socialist thinker—William Morris lived a thousand lives. Yet one unifying principle guided his endeavors: that of making beauty the driving force of work. As a company director, William Morris upheld this ambition in the running of the workshops he founded and directed. The aim of this article is therefore to highlight the originality of William Morris’s managerial thinking, by revealing how it provides an aesthetic response to the way in which work is conceived and organized. Using a methodological approach applied to research in business history, we show that William Morris’s managerial thinking can be seen as an aesthetic organization of work based on three imperatives: beauty, evident utility, and quality. |

Toutes auront eu en commun la poursuite d’un seul et même objectif, faire de la beauté la force motrice du travail. Ainsi, en tant que chef d’entreprise, William Morris conservera cette ambition dans la conduite des ateliers qu’il fondera et dirigera. L’objet de cet article est donc de mettre en exergue l’originalité de la pensée managériale de William Morris, en montrant en quoi elle apporte une réponse esthétique à la manière de concevoir et d’organiser le travail. En s’appuyant sur une démarche méthodologique appliquée aux recherches historiques en gestion, les auteurs montrent que la pensée managériale de William Morris peut être vue comme une organisation esthétique du travail qui repose sur trois impératifs : la beauté, l’utilité manifeste et la qualité. |
