| Summary, etc. | Recent developments in geopolitics and conflicts have transformed the modes of warfare and the resolution of international crises. In this new context, it is more important than ever to understand the causes of shifts in the equilibrium between nations, oscillating between competition, contestation and confrontation. To achieve this, we propose to model these ruptures using game theory. We show that moving to confrontation and persisting in costly combats can be rational tendencies. We draw lessons for strategy, diplomacy, the determination of war aims and the duration of confrontations. |

| Summary, etc. | Les évolutions récentes de la géopolitique et de la conflictualité ont transformé les modalités de la guerre et de la résolution des crises internationales. Dans ce nouveau contexte, il importe plus que jamais de comprendre les causes qui président aux changements d’équilibre entre nations, oscillant entre compétition, contestation et affrontement. Pour y parvenir, nous proposons ici de modéliser ces ruptures en nous appuyant sur la théorie des jeux. Nous montrons ainsi que passer à l’affrontement et persister dans un combat coûteux peuvent être des tendances rationnelles. Nous en tirons des enseignements quant à la stratégie, la diplomatie, la détermination des buts de guerre et la durée des affrontements. |
