520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This article explores the role of the state border in the unleashing of the Great Terror of 1937–8 in the USSR. Focusing on the Finnish border and using a vast body of archival sources, it explores the gradual intensification of security measures in the border regions of Soviet Karelia, where a large share of the Finnish-speaking population and the proximity of a perceived aggressor state became the justification for the use of violence in the state’s effort to provide for national security. I argue that the Soviet border regions, and especially Soviet Karelia, became one of the testing grounds for the large-scale use of violence as a form of governance of Soviet society.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
