520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Eighteenth-century Denmark was an absolutist state having contradictions such as an absolutist constitution. Denmark at this time was also characterized by ‘the Long Peace’ since Denmark managed to stay out of the many major European wars and also referring to the fact that Danish trade and shipping could thus prosper from neutrality. This article analyzes how this absolutist regime with its policy of neutrality and trade was presented to the public. It appears that Danish absolutism was presented as a political system committed to improving the social and material welfare of the population. The peace ideology was combined with a notion of what could be called a ‘special Danish way’, stressing that Danish absolutism was much better at securing freedom, equality and human rights than Revolutionary France. Even though the limits of free expression after 1784 were extremely wide, it was not possible publicly to denounce the system of absolutism. Nevertheless, indirect criticisms were expressed by clergymen or teachers. They could be found in Denmark proper as well as in other territories belonging to the Danish state such as Norway, Schleswig, Holstein and Iceland. It is argued that even though Denmark finally became involved in the Napoleonic Wars in 1801 and from 1807 with disastrous results, the ideology of peace has nonetheless remained, having a formative impact on Danish self-perception and Danish political culture even today.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
