Summary, etc. | Since the 1980’s the festival of Hanukka has been organised by the Habad-Lubavitch movement in the public spaces of the metropolis around the world. They are part of a missionary action that aims to bring as many Jews as possible to the practice of judaism. Surveys among the publics in Paris and London reveal that these festivals organized by an ultra-orthodox movement bring together the Jewish world beyond its own diversity along with non-Jewish sympathisers. Those events participate in a temporay bluring of boundaries between the urban and the ultra-orthodox worlds, and between the different movements within Judaism. They provide an opportunity to examine the role of transnational religious events in the (re)building of the belonging to the Jewish world and in negotiating a place in the city. |
