| Summary, etc. | This article is about the agency of toys in shaping childhood. My examples are from fieldwork at Swedish McDonald’s restaurants a few years ago, but of course the same thing applies for any toys. Since I have been studying global toys, McDonald’s Happy Meal toys, I will also discuss the processes of translation to fit Swedish (and to some extent Nordic) values. However unpredictable, materiality, such as the coil spring of Pinocchio and Jafar’s buttons, nevertheless enables particular relations to the environment, affords a range of actions, making certain trajectories possible, and thus plays an active part in shaping childhood. The fact that the tough plastic bags, the coil spring of Pinocchio and Jafar’s buttons and sticks play an active part in this process is obvious. Not only childhood, but also its artefacts matter. |

| Summary, etc. | Cet article porte sur l’influence des jouets sur la construction de l’enfance. Mes exemples proviennent d’une enquête menée voici quelques années au sein de restaurants suédois de la chaîne McDonald’s. Mais bien sûr les mêmes conclusions valent pour tous les jouets. Le fait d’avoir étudié des jouets globaux, ceux des menus Happy Meal de McDonald’s, permet cependant d’en tirer des enseignements en ce qui concerne les processus de traduction capables d’adapter ceux-ci aux valeurs suédoises, et dans une certaine mesure nordiques. Bien qu’imprévisible, la matérialité, comme le ressort hélicoïdal du bouton de Pinocchio et de Jafar, permet de ressentir des relations particulières avec l’environnement, offre toute une gamme d’actions, autorise certaines trajectoires, et joue ainsi un rôle actif dans le façonnage de l’enfance. Il est évident que la résistance des sacs plastiques, le ressort hélicoïdal du bouton et du bâtonnet de Pinocchio et de Jafar, jouent un rôle actif dans ce processus. C’est non seulement l’enfance qui compte, mais aussi les artefacts qui la peuplent… |
