| Summary, etc. | In 1780, during the American War of Independence, three northern powers, Russia, Denmark and Sweden, formed the League of Armed Neutrality. The reason for the League was defending neutral trade and shipping against all belligerents. In reality, the League primarily challenged British rule of the seas. This essay examines, from the Swedish perspective, the different priorities and reasons for participation in the League of the three northern powers. It analyses the impact of Sweden and Denmark’s cooperation on neutral trade and shipping during the war, and it traces the use of the concept of neutrality in the late eighteenth century. |

| Summary, etc. | En 1780, lors de la guerre d’Indépendance américaine, trois puissances du Nord, la Russie, le Danemark et la Suède s’associent pour former la ligue de la neutralité armée. La raison d’être de cette ligue est la défense du commerce et de la navigation neutres contre tous les belligérants. Mais en réalité, elle vise surtout à s’opposer à la prépondérance maritime britannique. Cet article étudie, dans une perspective suédoise, les différentes motivations des trois membres nordiques de la ligue de la neutralité armée. Nous voudrions analyser l’impact de la coopération entre la Suède et le Danemark pour la navigation et le commerce neutres durant la guerre, et voir comment le concept de neutralité est utilisé à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. |
