520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Because medieval towns lacked house numbers, a common feature of modern address systems, their inhabitants had to rely on other ways of characterising the locations of landed properties within urban space. This article retraces the means used to accomplish this in fifteenth-century Stockholm. Using surviving records made by the town registrars, it is possible to conclude that, in addition to other elements of physical space, the town dwellers themselves also served as landmarks on mental maps. Overall, the collective characteristics of medieval culture reveal that the mental space was oriented towards the individual to a surprising degree. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
