| Summary, etc. | At the beginning of the First World War, the Scandinavian countries tried to defend their neutrality together, essentially at the initiative of Sweden, which had more resources than its partners for doing so. Yet beyond their shared declarations between the summer of 1914 and February 1915, they were not really able to form a common front because they had different national interests and because the Reich and Great Britain held all the cards, forcing them to compromise. Nordic neutrality, although it did provide economic benefits for two years, was nevertheless a difficult and contradictory path to take. The interventionism of the great powers ended up dividing and overwhelming Scandinavian societies. |

| Summary, etc. | Au début de la Première Guerre mondiale, les pays scandinaves essaient de défendre ensemble leur neutralité, essentiellement d’ailleurs à l’initiative de la Suède qui dispose d’atouts plus importants que ses partenaires pour le faire. Mais au-delà de quelques déclarations communes entre août 1914 et février 1915, ils ne parviennent pas vraiment à faire front commun car leurs intérêts nationaux ne sont pas convergents et parce que le Reich et la Grande-Bretagne ont les cartes en main pour les amener à composer. La neutralité nordique, même si elle apporte durant deux ans des avantages économiques, est donc un chemin difficile et contradictoire. L’interventionnisme des grandes puissances finit par diviser et accabler les sociétés scandinaves. |
