520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In 1941, the Panamerican Airways sought to build an airport in French Guiana, which they would later name “the Gallion”. However, the French colony was then governed by Vichy. This rendered permit negotiations with the US cumbersome, and this caused the Panamerican to struggle to complete its project. However, the Gallion proved to be critical for French Guiana in March 1943 when it rallied the French Resistance. Indeed, this later led the US army to take over the Gallion. As such, French Guiana became a South American strategic spot for the US. One might thus ask the question: was the Gallion airport a “useful failure” for American ambitions in the French colony?
