Summary, etc. This paper attempts to reconsider the notion of community on the basis of a sociological and micro-historical study of Turkish football clubs in France and Germany. These clubs have been selected according to three criteria: a reference to Turkey in the association’s founding statement and mode of operation, their establishment in a city with a high proportion of inhabitants of Turkish origin and the strong presence of these people in the local football club. While amateur football represents a source of valorization for recent immigrants, our analysis shows that sport-related oppositions between the groups involved can also produce symbolic rivalries between established migrants and outsiders, leading people to withdraw further into their own communities. Football clubs may thus appear as privileged space for the expression of an “Us vs. Them” mindset.
