Summary, etc. | Based on ethnographic fieldwork, this article analyzes how Nigerian sex workers cross geographical, administrative and social boundaries as they attempt to gain citizenship as trafficked victims. These crossings are seized through negotiations between sex workers and those who allow them to progress towards their recognition as victims. Focusing on the relation between these women and their brokers makes it possible to question the normative framework in which their migrations are apprehended. If the contours of geographical crossings are clearly defined on a map, those implied by administrative and social crossings are much less obvious. Studying the interactions at play in these crossings allows us to understand the depth of borders. This depth can be measured not only by the amount of time spent trying to cross internal borders, but also the efforts engaged by these women and their brokers to gain a status deemed more stable and legitimate in France. |
