The anxiety caused by the loss of a sense of self-continuity manifests as trauma to the weakened ego. The author describes the clinical case of a 91-year-old woman with dementia to illustrate the traumatic effects of such overwhelming anxiety: an unresolved psychic temporality, leading to a physical expression of anxiety; the defensive role played by the repetition of this anxiety; and finally a therapeutic intervention using the therapist’s auxiliary ego, and his work on boundaries with the aim of restoring the patient’s identity." |
