Summary, etc. "The process of dementia causes many losses, both cognitive and psychological, which disorient the ego and weaken its defenses. The identity is also undermined. The anxiety caused by the loss of a sense of self-continuity manifests as trauma to the weakened ego. The author describes the clinical case of a 91-year-old woman with dementia to illustrate the traumatic effects of such overwhelming anxiety: an unresolved psychic temporality, leading to a physical expression of anxiety; the defensive role played by the repetition of this anxiety; and finally a therapeutic intervention using the therapist’s auxiliary ego, and his work on boundaries with the aim of restoring the patient’s identity."
