| Summary, etc. | Through a brief historical overview, we attempt to demonstrate that, contrary to what most people think, the status differences between men and women were not larger in the beginning of mankind’s history than they were later. Some events that mark the history of the relationships between the sexes were, however, forgotten or distorted by selective omission or reconstruction. Absent from collective memory, they allowed the formation and structure of new beliefs about the nature and the vocation of the two sexes. The reasonableness of these beliefs is discussed, as well as the role they presently play in the maintenance of social order. |
