This special issue delves deeply into the many facets of these interactions by analyzing key open innovation processes. The selected articles explore a variety of contexts, including fintech, the healthcare sector, and academic spin-offs, shedding light on critical mechanisms such as managing cognitive distance, orchestrating complex ecosystems, and transforming collaborative practices. By demonstrating how these collaborations not only foster organizational learning but also enable the co-creation of shared knowledge and the emergence of new institutions, this special issue offers a fresh perspective on the roles of the various actors involved.
