| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | In Belgium, as in France, there has been an almost constant public debate on the position of Islam and Muslims within Belgian society ever since the first cases of headscarves in schools in 1989. In this context, young Muslims often experience a form of media over-visibility as a group whose identity is problematised in the public space (delinquency, riots, terrorism, lack of respect for the rules of lockdown). In this article, we draw on the discourse of 124 young people collected in 16 group interviews and some 20 semi-structured individual interviews. We show that discrimination is part of the mental map of the young people we interviewed, whether it is due to personal or family experiences or is the result of identifying with a group that is perceived as having been violated in its fundamental rights, particularly the free public exercise of its religion. Our data also shows a strong identification as a Muslim, which is not exclusive of other types of identifications claimed simultaneously. Finally, we highlight the processes of reflexivity, appropriation, and individualisation of belief, as well as the negotiation of certain religious norms underway among Muslim youth in Brussels. |
