Summary, etc. Conducted among 2,300 individuals representative of the French population selected by an ELIPSS panel (Longitudinal Internet Studies for Social Sciences), the Pratiques de visites des Français survey was conducted via a tablet-based quiz to observe the distribution of artistic knowledge across the population and question the link between cultural behaviour and familiarity with the visual arts. Respondents’ sociodemographic characteristics were divided into quartiles based on their quiz responses and appraised paying particular attention to the highest and lowest scores. Whilst artistic knowledge increases with age, pointing to the effects of age and knowledge capitalisation, gender-based differences can be observed in the younger generation. Whilst women under 35 obtained higher scores, connected to the effects of child socialisation and educational choices, the picture is reversed in those aged 55 and over. Social stratification of quiz results also shows an unequal distribution of artistic knowledge: whilst being in receipt of higher incomes or being a member of the upper classes is correlated with a broader knowledge base, educational levels prove even more divisive. Examination of cultural behaviours indicates that success in the quiz is particularly correlated to the development of cultural heritage visits, book reading and arts-related internet usage. Finally, it appears that, all other things being equal, regular or occasional attendance of museums and exhibitions is most strongly correlated with success in the quiz, even more so than level of education or social background.
