| Summary, etc. | René Maunier (1887–1951) developed an interest in foreign countries and local cultures, following a posting to Cairo and then Algiers. A professor of colonial economics and legislation from 1922 onwards, he held several positions in the colonial administration, specializing in ‘Algerian sociology’. Through fieldwork, he became one of France's foremost experts on Berber populations, and in particular on the phenomena of contact between races and cultures, and the changes they bring about. In his eyes, the study of these contacts should lead to action: to bring about change and reform, in the best interests of the metropolis and the colonized peoples themselves, in territories subject to interdependence. His interests intersect with Durkheimian sociology in the way social facts are considered and analyzed, and he writes on several occasions about the interest and scientific scope of Durkheimian sociology. He also published in L'Année Sociologique and Annales Sociologiques, but was never a Durkheimian in the full sense of the term. Maunier's attitude during the Occupation and the sanctions imposed on him brought his career to an abrupt halt, and harmed the spread of his ideas. As a result, he did not enjoy the posterity he would have deserved. |

| Summary, etc. | René Maunier (1887–1951), va développer un intérêt pour les pays étrangers et les cultures locales, suite à une affectation au Caire, puis à Alger. Professeur d’économie et de législation coloniales, à partir de 1922, occupant des postes dans l'administration coloniale, il se spécialise en ‘sociologie algérienne’. Effectuant des voyages d’études sur le terrain, il devient l'un des meilleurs connaisseurs français des populations berbères, en particulier des phénomènes de contact entre les races et les cultures, et des changements qu'ils provoquent. L’étude de ces contacts doit déboucher à ses yeux sur une action : faire évoluer et réformer au mieux des intérêts de la métropole et des peuples colonisés eux-mêmes, des territoires soumis à des liens d'interdépendance. Ses intérêts croisent la sociologie durkheimienne sur la manière dont le fait social est considéré et analysé, et il écrit à diverses reprises sur l'intérêt et la portée scientifique de la sociologie durkheimienne. Il publie aussi dans L'Année sociologique et les Annales sociologiques, mais ne sera jamais un durkheimien au sens fort du terme. L'attitude de Maunier durant l'Occupation et la sanction dont il a fait l'objet ont brutalement interrompu une carrière, et nui à la propagation de ses idées. Si bien qu'il n'a pas eu la postérité qu'il aurait méritée. |
