| Summary, etc. | Located between the sea and mountains, the department of Pyrénées Orientales owes its wealth in thermal waters to geological structures related to the formation of the Pyrenees. Since Roman times, the use of baths has continued through the centuries, though initially in very rudimentary conditions. In the 18th century, the first scientific studies sought to describe the properties of the waters and their effects on health. But it was in the 19th century, benefiting from improved communication systems and the rise of a wealthy social class, that thermalism truly flourished. The simple bathers of the past became spa-goers, and thermal establishments became real vacation destinations. After the 1939–45 war, the restrictions brought by the creation of Social Security led to the disappearance or transformation of some establishments, aiming to make care more accessible to a larger part of the population. Finally, the 21st century sees the emergence of a new form of water usage: thermoludism. |

| Summary, etc. | Situé entre mer et montagne, le département des Pyrénées Orientales doit sa richesse en eaux thermales à des structures géologiques liées à la formation des Pyrénées. Depuis l’époque romaine, l’usage des bains s’est poursuivi au fil des siècles, dans des conditions très sommaires. Au XVIIIe siècle, les premières études scientifiques ont cherché à décrire les propriétés des eaux et leurs effets sur la santé. Mais c’est au XIXe siècle, profitant de l’amélioration des moyens de communications et du développement dans la société d’une classe sociale aisée, que le thermalisme a pris véritablement son essor. Les simples baigneurs du passé sont ainsi devenus des curistes, les établissements thermaux de véritables lieux de villégiature. Après la guerre 1939-45, les restrictions liées à la création de la Sécurité sociale ont entrainé la disparition ou la transformation de certains établissements, tout en favorisant l’accès des soins à une plus grande partie de la population. Enfin, le XXIe siècle voit apparaître une nouvelle formule d’usage des eaux : le thermoludisme. |
