520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. A description of common parental beliefs and child care practices by parents in the Midwest of the USA is presented. There are several underlying assumptions that support the actual child care practices. Some of the most important ones are the belief in self-reliance, in being a strong individual and the need for separation-individuation by late adolescence. Parents prepare children for these separations and self-reliance often as early as possible. Behavioral modification strategies often run counter to the biological/ethological imperatives of young children, and against parental intuition to respond empathically to their children. We describe techniques of child discipline, touch, strategies for feeding and helping children sleep.
