| Summary, etc. | Shame seems as an affect worthy of interest in our time, notably by its use in the militant and political sphere. The signifier “shame” circulates with the “humiliation” one, sometimes in a quite indistinction. We propose here an attempt to distinguish between shame and humiliation, based on elements present in the Western culture where we are located, and by mobilizing the Freudian and Lacanian theories of the psychoanalytical field. The supported hypothesis consists in a description of the shame as a subjective psychological process, which takes place on the imaginary level, during which the subject makes the report of an ideal-ego insufficient to support the ego. The hypothesis continues by proposing that humiliation, which occurs in a real scene, induces a subjective phenomenon on a symbolic level, during which the ego-ideal may or may not waver. We also support the hypothesis that only an adequacy between the ego-ideal and an other who acts the humiliation leads the humiliated subject towards an affect of shame. In so doing, through metapsychology, we propose an articulation between shame and humiliation that is situated on the link woven between subjective and social. |

| Summary, etc. |
