Summary, etc. In this article on the political philosophy of education and the contemporary history of political and educational ideas, we look at the two successive phases through which Arendt became, in the French intellectual arena, first a major theorist of totalitarianism, and then a classic reference in the philosophy of education. In particular, we show how her combination of resolute political anti-totalitarianism and no less solid educational conservatism became a standard, and is today the source of some of our difficulties in thinking positively about a democratic education that is compatible with the hypermodern society of individuals and not, more negatively, about a totalitarian education that may not be free of problematic aristocratic remanences, in the sense that Tocqueville gives to the term.

Summary, etc. Dans cet article de philosophie politique de l’éducation et d’histoire contemporaine des idées politiques et éducatives, nous nous intéressons aux deux phases successives par lesquelles Arendt est devenue, dans l’espace intellectuel français, d’abord une théoricienne majeure du totalitarisme, ensuite une référence classique en philosophie de l’éducation. Nous montrons en particulier comment son articulation d’un antitotalitarisme politique résolu et d’un non moins solide conservatisme éducatif fit école, et est aujourd’hui à la source de certaines de nos difficultés à penser positivement une éducation démocratique compatible avec la société hypermoderne des individus et non, de manière plus négative, une éducation non totalitaire qui peut ne pas être exempte de rémanences aristocratiques (au sens que Tocqueville donne à ce terme) problématiques.
