Summary, etc. According to Hannah Arendt, education is the mission of school, while the mission of higher education is to impart knowledge to produce citizens who can think independently. This article argues that « learning about the world » is essential in higher education, particularly for engineers, to enhance their sense of responsibility towards others and future generations, and to ensure that they remain aware of the impacts broader scope of their work. Arendt’s concepts of alienation and the banality of evil are used to redefine the professional responsibility of engineers and suggest ways to incorporate both moral and political aspects into their ethical training.

Summary, etc. Selon Hannah Arendt, l’éducation doit se limiter à l’école, tandis que la mission de l’enseignement supérieur est de transmettre des savoirs pour former des citoyens capables de penser librement. Cet article défend l’idée que « l’apprentissage du monde » a toute sa place dans l’enseignement supérieur, en particulier dans la formation des ingénieurs : pour renforcer leur sentiment de responsabilité envers autrui et les générations futures et leur capacité à prendre soin du monde, que leur métier pourrait facilement faire oublier du fait de sa complexité (dilution des responsabilités, effets partiellement inconnus, souvent distants…). Les concepts arendtiens d’aliénation (de la terre et du monde) et de banalité du mal sont mobilisés afin de redéfinir la responsabilité professionnelle des ingénieurs et proposer des pistes pour leur formation éthique qui soit à la fois morale et politique.
