| Summary, etc. | The Tondaimans, an ancient royal family from Pudukkottai (Tamil Nadu, South India), have been using photography for various social purposes since 1858. The family’s social status was redefined after independence in 1947. The Tondaimans managed to make photography their own, improve its preservation and increase its circulation, which led to the enhancement of their cultural heritage. The family was thus able to strengthen its status in local society. |

| Summary, etc. | L’utilisation de la photographie par les Tondaiman, ancienne famille royale de Pudukkottai (Tamil Nadu, Inde du Sud), s’est développée dès 1858 et répondit à des usages sociaux variés. La position sociale de cette famille fut redéfinie après l’indépendance de 1947. Son appropriation de la photographie, l’amélioration de sa conservation ainsi que sa mise en circulation progressive entraînèrent des évolutions dans la mise en valeur du patrimoine photographique familial et permirent aux Tondaiman de renforcer leur statut au sein de la société locale. |
