520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In the last twenty years or so, the development of systematic search campaigns has made increasingly clear the presence of a rural habitat in Southern France, a fact which has been independently confirmed through the multiplication of excavations of rural settlements. This new element plays into the debates around modes of land use. What weight should we give, from now on, in the protohistoric population systems, to the oppidum and to scattered settlements respectively ? Was the scattering of rural settlements throughout available space a characteristic of the Iron Age, or was it only a continuation of a previous movement ? Was the appearance of this phenomenon linked to economic and / or social changes? Whatever the case, it is now certain that the spatial organization of protohistoric communities was characterized by a diversification of the forms of habitats which went far beyond the traditional couple oppidum - scattered rural settlement.
